Cooksey, George Basil. Name match only in Army List 1918. G B Cooksey, Dental Surgeon, Lieutenant, 4th May 1918. George Cooksey senior was a dental surgeon in Fishergate Hill. In 1922 George Basil Cooksey, LDS, RCS (Eng), was in practice on his own at 25, later 28, Winckley Square. It is highly unlikely that there were two qualified dentists of the same unusual name, with an unidentified one in the Army. This remains a name match only but the assumption must be that another Old Boy on active service in the Great War has been traced.
Corless, George Matthew. Another original source has been found which gives his age as 13, and born in 1890. There is now no contradiction between age and age on entry into the School. Two RN destroyers came down the Bosphorus escorting the Goeben. Left Constantinople 2.30pm for Sevastopol to take over police duties from the departed Germans. Food on board was excellent with large supplies of butter, which he had not tasted for eighteen months.
Name match only: Douglas, Andrew Bruce Father - Revd Andrew Douglas, 328 (358) New Hall Lane, Preston. 1922 - St Cuthbert’s Vicarage, Preston. Andrew born 17th December 1897 or 1898. PGS 22nd April 1907 to Personal and School details added to main List. VEdwards, Llewellyn Foster War Memorial. The Army records and cross-references him under both names and also as being in “BRCS” - British Red Cross Society. He was a “chauffeur” in BRCS, that is a driver. His contact address is given as Miss F Morrison, 66 Brackenbury Road, Preston. He is shown as Disembarkation 21st October 1914 on Roll and is also shown as 11th May 1915. Presumably these are dates of arrival in France but the Army no doubt knows what it means so gives no explanations.
Fazackerley, Frederick born 29th April 1880 PGS 14th January 1892 to June 1895. Lance-Corporal. Named and rank given as a son in the funeral report of Richard Fazackerley, St Andrew’s Church, Monday, 20th August 1917, Preston Guardian 25th August 1917.
Fazackerley, Harold Lieutenant. Named and rank given as a son in the funeral report of Richard Fazackerley, St Andrew’s Church, Monday, 20th August 1917, Preston Guardian 25th August 1917. Father - Richard Fazackerley, 17 Beech Grove, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston. Secretary. Harold aged 12, born 1892. St Andrew’s. PGS 11th September 1905 to
(Following is a record “just in case” he is traced to PGS.) Fazackerley, Philip Was not at the funeral, was serving in France in the Loyal North Lancashires. Named as a son, St Andrew’s Church, Monday, 20th August 1917, in the funeral report of Richard Fazackerley, Preston Guardian 25th August 1917. No record has so far been found of attending PGS. Private in LNL and then 2nd Lieut Manchesters.
Friedenthal, Frederick John Joseph born 17th May 1880 PGS 14th January 1892 to April 1895. 2nd Form July 1893. 3rd Form July 1894. Shorthand Prize 1894. PGSA No 136, 21st Dec 1925. 5 Powis Road, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston. 41 Mulgrave Avenue, Ashton, Preston. Personal and School details added to main List.
Friedenthal, Richard Ernest James Father - Frederick Friedenthal, Westleigh, Ashton-on-Ribble. Engineer. Richard born 1891, aged 12. No elementary school named. PGS 21st January 1904 to Personal and School details added to main List. . Furlong, Ernest William Hyde born 14th May 1883. PGS 6th October 1893 to April 1896. 1st Form July 1894. Third Officer, HMHS Carisbrook Castle, H4-1915, H1-1916 (initials given as E M). HELP IS REQUIRED with this one, please. Only one branch of the family appears to use “Hyde” as a name. Charles Hyde Furlong, born 30th March 1887, was at PGS from May 1900, his father is given as Captain Joseph Allen (Alan is also used) of 3 Sea View, Ashton-on-Ribble, serving in the Royal Lancashire Reserve Regiment. In 1898 he lived at 8 Cliff Street, Preston. Sea View is a Terrace on Tulketh Road opposite St Michael’s Church and was obviously built before Egerton Road’s houses and trees spoilt the view down to Lytham! In 1885 Captain Joseph Allen Furlong lived at 63 Lansdowne Terrace, Brackenbury Road; in 1889 he lived at 2 Burnaby villas, Fulwood. Burnaby villas is the last block east of the Workhouse on Watling Street Road - now the first block to the east of Sharoe Green Lane junction with Watling Street Road. Lieutenant Allan Hyde Furlong, RNR, aged 45, HMS Carol, died on 14th March 1920, the son of Major J A Furlong. He is recorded as Commonwealth War Dead and his grave is C20, 4. 47., Worthing Broadwater Cemetery. Carol is listed as an RFA or auxiliary oiler. Harry Leslie Joseph Furlong, born 11th November 1881, was at PGS 6th October 1893 to April 1896. Ethel Annie Furlong was noted in The Hoghtonian as having had two brothers at PGS whereas three are given above. Birth years are 1875 (estimated), 1881, 1883, 1887, and the eldest, Allan Hyde Furlong, could have been educated before the family arrived in Preston or may pre-date some of my PGS records. Additional personal and School details to add to main list. Glaister, G F Goodair Exhibitioner and Reddaway Exhibitioner at Fitzwilliam Hall, Cambridge, during the Easter term passed third class in Part I History Tripos. OBM-12-1910.
Halewood, Harold Private Harold Halewood, New Zealand Rifles, son of Mr Alfred Halewood, bookseller, Friargate, Preston, is now in the Dublin Hospital, France, having been wounded at Messines. The chaplain has written stating that Pte Halewood is in good spirits, is progressing favourably, and will shortly be sent over to “Blighty”. He is an old boy of Preston Grammar School, and was previously wounded on the first day of the big push. Preston Guardian 16th June 1917.
VCorporal A N G Hargreaves joined the Royal Engineers, Signalling Company, early in 1915 and went to France about 12 months ago. His colonel wrote to Mr and Mrs W J Hargreaves, 276 Plungington Road, Preston: “I regret to have to tell you that your son was killed in action yesterday. Please accept my deepest sympathy. He was doing such excellent work, and setting so fine an example to all other ranks at his post, that, had he lived, I had every hope of getting him some form of official recognition. He had had a very trying time lately, and had come through the ordeal with greatly-enhanced reputation.” Corporal Hargreaves was educated at the Preston Grammar School and gained a Preston Corporation scholarship there when 15 years of age. At the time of his enlistment he was employed at the Manchester offices of the firm of Messrs A S Orr and Co Ltd, cotton spinners and manufacturers, Castleton and School Lane. His younger brother, Second Lieut C R Hargreaves, is serving with the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. (Preston Guardian 12th May 1917) (School Lane would be Bamber Bridge.) Elementary School now identified, St Mark’s School.

PGSA membership 1910, address - Hodgson J W B MA, Penwortham Priory, Preston. RASC 27th November 1916 Temp 2nd Lieutenant. Lieutenant. France 20th October 1917. On 6th January 1939 was contacted by the Military at West Highwood, Walton-le-Dale. There is no evidence of a son with the same initials but there are numerous entries for J W Hodgson. There are references at early PGSOBA Dinners to Dr James Birkett Hodgson, who appears to be the father.
V Howard, Arthur Lythgoe War Memorial. Father - Amos Howard, 24 Grafton Street, Preston. Police Inspector. Arthur aged 13, born 1892. Grimshaw Street School. PGS 11th September 1905. Killed In War. This is the difficult identification now properly linking all known facts to an entry in the School records which includes his middle name and which also states that he was killed in the war. His brother William Henry was at the School, and because of the age has a question mark against possible military service.
Howarth, Alfred Hartley Father - Alfred Howarth, 84 Stephenson Terrace, Deepdale Road, Preston. Deputy Town Clerk. Alfred aged 13, born 1893. Grimshaw Street School. PGS 21st January 1907 to January 1907 - April 1910. PGSA No 179, 13th July 1925. 52 Manor House Lane, Preston. 2 Brooklands, Egerton Road, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston. Additional personal and School details. Jackson, Andrew Father - Thomas Jackson, Hough Lane, Leyland. Chemist. Andrew aged 12, born 1892. Balshaw’s School. PGS 21st January 1904 This is the only “A Jackson” to have been traced attending the School at a time which would make him eligible to serve during the Great War. There are insufficient details to enable the identity of the reported death on war service to be linked to this boy. He had a slightly older brother, George, who attended PGS from 24th September 1903 and then went to Balshaw’s. An Andrew Jackson joined the Association on 13th January 1926 and was struck off the membership quite soon after. This follows a pattern involving ex-Servicemen. It seems most likely that the report in The Hoghtonian of A Jackson being killed in action was erroneous.
Julian, Thomas Ennor Copland born 12th August 1882. PGS 18th (?) April 1894 to xxxxx. Pros 1900-33. 1st Form July 1894. School Scholar, elected 1898. School Captain 1901. Private, Royal Highlanders, Number 21355. Sapper, Royal Engineers, Service Number 368287. He has campaign medals from Army service 1914-1918.
Kay, James Stanley Awarded the Military Cross 3rd July 1917, Citation states: At -------, during the period 1st to 10th June 1917, this officer did most excellent work as intelligence officer to the battalion, sending in most valuable information. He showed great devotion to duty by continually observing himself and visiting his observers. He located enemy movement and artillery in action and on one occasion directed our artillery fire. Second Lieutenant Kay has done consistent good work during the past four months as intelligence officer, and also done several good patrols. On one occasion (20th April 1917) he went out into No Man’s Land in daylight to rescue a wounded man and was himself wounded in attempting this rescue.
Second Lieut J G Lindsay of Ash Grove, Cadley, son of Mr D Lindsay, of Preston and Cadley, has been wounded in France, and is now in hospital. He received a gunshot wound in his thigh and his early letters gave the impression that it was not serious but a telegram from the hospital on Wednesday summoned his wife, and Mrs Lindsay at once left on the journey. Lt Lindsay commenced training for his commission in February 1915, and early this year, having completed his course, he was gazetted Lieutenant to the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. His wedding to Miss Olive Patterson, second daughter of Mr William Patterson, Fern Bank, Cadley, took place during his last leave on February 24th, and the same day he left for active service in France. Preston Guardian, Saturday 21st April 1917. Fern Bank is near the Spar stores on the corner of Cadley Causeway. Mr Patterson a cattle dealer, had at least two sons at PGS, Archie is listed above in the Loyals. Mr Duncan Lindsay, a draper, had three sons at the School, Andrew, James, Norman. Andrew and James were in the 33 pupils on which Brooks rebuilt the School when he followed Beaven. Both joined PGSA in 1910 and James was a regular at the Annual Dinner into the 1950s. Lindsay, James Gray born 15th January 1887 PGS 30th January 1896 to xxxx PGSA No 272, 5th November 1927. 47 Lytham Road, Fulwood, Preston. 5 Eastgate, Kings Drive, Fulwood, Preston. Mears, Horace Father - Thomas Mears, Ruthinville Highgate Avenue Fulwood; 1922. Westminster Dragoons, H1-1916. Served in the 2nd County of London Yeomanry, Private 2820, then to 4th Reserve Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment 26th October 1915, Private 205397. Service is shown as Home to 25th April 1916. Embarked Southampton 26th April 1916 arrived Havre 27th April 1916. Appears to have been transferred to the Tank Corps Training Centre on 19th August 1917. Sailed Southampton arrived Havre both on 30th November 1917. Posted to 12th Battalion York & Lancaster that date and joined the Battalion in the Field on 8th December 1817. Then Home Service from 29th March 1918. From 29th March 1918 to 16th May 1918, 49 days, in hospital (Leeds?) with what seems to have been flesh wounds to left shoulder and left leg. On 16th August 1918 at No 5 TMB, Catterick. Demobbed on 19th February 1919 and seems to have an unblemished record as there is a note on his Regimental Conduct Sheet that it has no entries upon it. War Service details added.
Miller, Thomas H 3rd Form 1883. 1885. 4th Form 1886. Greek Prize Division C 1884. PGSA 249, 12th March 1927. Miller, Thomas Henry Dr Military Cross ChB 2 Avenham Colonnade, Preston. Died 1938 There was one Miller, T H listed in the 1918 Army List - a 2nd Lieut, commissioned 1st March 1917, 1st/5th Durham Light Infantry. He would have been approximately 42 years of age. The Military Cross was first awarded in a list published 1st January 1915.
CEDRIC NAYLOR Clarification of the movements of ships for Operation Ironclad. This is Second World War but Cedric Naylor’s report commences in The Great War, continues between the Wars and extends through 1939-1945 and later to his death. It appears sensible to have a single report rather than break it into sections, with a consequent loss of continuity. A military convoy WS17, 32 ships, left Britain on 23rd March 1942 carrying the 5th Infantry Division. On 25th March major ships of the United States Navy set out from USA for Scapa Flow to relieve the Home Fleet which in turn was replacing Force H for duties on Ironclad. The Military Convoy put in to Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 6th April, meeting up with Force H and all sailing on 9th April. On 19th April the warships put into Cape Town and the remainder continued to Durban to arrive on the 22nd. WS17 included several ships not involved in Ironclad but sailing in the convoy to take advantage of the escorting ships. On 25th April slow convoy Y left Durban and on 28th fast convoy Z, which included HMS Karanja, left Durban. On 3rd May the two convoys, escorting ships, and units from the Eastern Fleet all linked up. The invasion took place on 5th May.
Press report 26th May 1917, extremely brief, that in a list issued Thursday 24th May 1917 Cedric Naylor had been awarded a Bar to the DSC which had been reported recently. The father, William, was born about 1869 and his mother, Prisalla M, was born about 1866, both born in Crewe. Cedric was born in Wolverhampton, and his siblings were born in Preston. Ida was one year and Wilson was four years younger than Cedric; Briadley was a year younger than Wilson and Ruth was two years younger than Briadley. (In 1901 Census - 9, 8, 5, 4, 2 respectively.) Presumably Wilson and Briadley were the two younger brothers who enlisted in the Royal Engineers. It is not known if this was the complete family or if there were children after Ruth. In the household at 3 West View were a cook/domestic, Annie Franklin from Wexford; and a 15-year old housemaid, Emily Eastham, born in Preston. Honour for Fulwood Naval Officer: Lieutenant Cedric Naylor, RNR, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W Naylor, 3 Garstang Road, Fulwood, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order for special service. Early this year Lieut Naylor received the Distinguished Service Cross, and a short time later a Bar to the DSC. Preston Guardian 25th August 1917. DSO for Fulwood Naval Officer: In the list of those who were presented with decorations by the King at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday (29th August 1917), appears the name, under “U-boat fighters”, of Lieut Cedric Naylor, RNR, of 3 Garstang Road, Fulwood, who received the DSO. In May this year Lieut Naylor was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and in July the Bar to the DSC for special service. Preston Guardian 1st September 1917. There is no evidence up to the present of Wilson or Briadley having been at PGS. However, as a record, CWG shows: Wilson Naylor, 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Air Force, 4th Squadron, aged 22 years, was killed on 15th April 1918. The son of Priscilla Mary Naylor and the late William Naylor. Memorial Reference: Arras Flying Services Memorial. CWG records family details as they were at the time the specific entry was compiled and there are many entries where parents have died or widows have remarried in the interim; usual name spellings replacing unusual spellings also occur.

The following is a provisional note. There is as yet no evidence of Andrew Smith attending PGS. It is not known how many brothers he may have had. Two brothers have been identified at the School. Andrew, John and William Smith, Lower Barker, Goosnargh. Preston Guardian 31st March 1917 CWG: Andrew Smith, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards Private 26 years. Died 9th March 1917. Service Number 15294. Son of James and Mary Ann Smith, Lower Barker, Goosnargh, Lancashire. Grave reference: VI . J . 9, Sailly-Saillisel British Military Cemetery. Two brothers at the School were: John, born 17th May 1886. PGS January 1900 to William, born 18th October 1888. PGS January 1901 to Classical side. The Preston Guardian report stated that Andrew had two brothers serving, one had gone through Gallipoli and the other was currently (March 1917) in Mesopotamia. The report did not identify the two brothers, neither did it state which had served where. There are thousands of John Smith and William Smith soldiers and without details of regiments they are virtually untraceable. Further information is now required, please, which can only come from 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation descendents.
